Is your range hood failing to pull air up through the fan? Clogged filters or a faulty fan motor can cause this problem. A bad fan switch or failed electronic control board can prevent the fan from running.

Reasons why your range hood is not circulating air

Poor air circulation is a common issue that affects range hoods. Fortunately, there are a few easy steps you can take to get your range hood back in top condition.

The first step you'll want to take is checking the grease filters on the range hood. They can be easily removed and inspected. If the grease filters are saturated in grease, you'll want to clean them thoroughly according to the instructions in the owner's manual. Too much grease can block air from moving through the filters easily.

After taking care of the grease filters, look around inside the range hood for any other obstructions. If the vents are blocked or obstructed, clean them out as well. The blower fan is also susceptible to getting blocked or clogged. If the fan isn't clogged but it doesn't spin properly, the fan may be broken, or it could be an issue with the fan motor. Try to spin the blade by pushing it; if it doesn't move, then you'll likely need to have it swapped out with a new one.

What are some replaceable parts in a range hood?

  1. Electronic control board—The electronic control board governs most functions of the range hood. If the unit isn't responsive to your desired settings, it may be time to replace it with a new one.
  2. Fan blade—The fan blade pulls air from the room and either vents it outside or recirculates it through a vent at the top of the range hood.
  3. Grease filter—These filters trap any grease and other particulates before they enter the range hood, which protects the internal components. Dirty grease filters need to be cleaned to ensure proper air flow.
  4. Fan motor—The fan motor spins the fan blade to provide air movement through the range hood. If you can move the blade by hand but it doesn't spin during use, the fan motor may be faulty.
  5. Charcoal filter—Some range hoods are equipped with a charcoal filter that helps remove any cooking odors from the air before it's recirculated into the room. It will need to be replaced from time to time as it becomes saturated with grease.
