How much water should I run through a new refrigerator water filter?

Immediately after installing the new water filter in your refrigerator, run 2 to 3 gallons of water through the dispenser to purge air from the refrigerator water tubing and flush carbon dust and residue out of the water filter cartridge.

Flushing residue from the water filter cartridge keeps carbon dust from turning ice cubes gray and making dispensed water cloudy.

Purging trapped air in the water filter and water tubing helps prevent the water dispenser from dripping constantly after you install the new filter.

Why do I need to replace the water filter every 6 months?

Replacing your refrigerator water filter every 6 months ensures that you get clean ice and safe water from your refrigerator. Many water filters have the capacity to filter about 200 gallons. You’ll typically use about that amount of water every 6 months through your fridge. After that, the filter media inside the water filter cartridge is used up and won’t effectively continue to filter impurities from the water supply. Stay safe by replacing your refrigerator water filter every 6 months or when the filter reminder light turns on.
