How to clear blockages in your Hoover canister vacuum cleaner

Low suction or poor dirt pick up may be caused by a blockage in the nozzle or hose system of your canister vacuum.

When you notice decreased suction or when the vacuum isn't picking up dirt like it should, check the power nozzle for a clog first. Remove the power nozzle from the wand and turn it upside down. Unlock the nozzle cover latches and open the nozzle. Clean debris from brush roll and nozzle openings.

If you find no blockages in the nozzle, check the wand for any clogs and clear any blockages in the wand.

Disconnect the hose and thoroughly check the hose for blockages. Clear any hose blockages and reassemble the vacuum.

Common repair parts for Hoover canister vacuum cleaners

  • Adjustable wand. The adjustable wand is a stiff suction tube that attaches to the cleaning head at one end and the vacuum hose at the other end. The wand telescopes, so its length can be adjusted. The wand transfers dirt from the cleaning head to the vacuum hose. The wand has a handle at the end that enables the user to maneuver the cleaning head.
  • Dirt sensor. The dirt sensor is a set of optic lenses that detects the amount of dirt and debris moving through the vacuum hose to the collection bag in the vacuum.
  • Suction motor. The suction motor rotates the vacuum fan assembly to create suction in the vacuum.
  • Vacuum hose. The vacuum hose runs from the cleaning attachment to the dirt collection chamber in the vacuum cleaner.
