Home appliances never break at a convenient time. You may be getting the house ready for dinner guests and suddenly, that burnt smell of a broken vacuum cleaner belt permeates the home. Sometimes, the hose clogs and there is no hope of more suction until you remove the hose and clear the clog. There are a couple different things that could be wrong with your vacuum, but it may be possible to repair these issues on your own with the right parts and tools.

Basic vacuum care

Many vacuums come with replaceable filters. These need to be replaced on a schedule determined by the manufacturer, so make sure to purchase a new filter and reinstall it according to the owner's manual. Some vacuums have reusable filters that you can simply rinse, dry and reinstall. If you have a vacuum that collects dirt, replace the bag when it's full; if you have a bagless model, empty the bin.

Common vacuum cleaner parts do-it-yourselfers can install

  • Wands and hoses: When wands or hoses become damaged, even small holes and tears can greatly affect the suction of your vacuum. Luckily, they are easy to replace. Make sure to choose a hose or wand long enough to clean hard-to-reach areas.
  • Levers and switches: These are simple, yet integral, parts of any vacuum cleaner. Levers aid in placing the vacuum in the correct position to clean while switches are designed to turn the machine on and off.
  • Brush roll: Some cleaning heads have a brush roll that lift dirt and debris from the floor and deposit it into the bag or dirt bin. Sometimes, the brush roll gets clogged with hair or debris and needs to be cleaned out. If the cylinder is damaged or the bristles are worn, the roll will need to be replaced.
  • Vacuum wheel: Replace any broken wheels to make sure you can move the vacuum where you need to and avoid potential damage to your floor.
  • Brush roll belt: The brush roll belt turns the cylinder when it is turned by the motor pulley. Replacing the belt is a common fix for all vacuums, and selecting the right belt is crucial as the wrong belt can severely affect the performance of the vacuum or render it unusable.

Types of vacuum belts

When it is time to replace your vacuum belt, you'll need to determine whether you need a round belt, a flat belt, a cogged belt or a V-belt. Each one has a different length of time it lasts before it needs a replacement:

  • Flat belts: Flat belts are the most common type used. These last around six to nine months.
  • Round belts: These types of belts are tube-shaped and rely on elastic tension to stay in place. These need to be replaced around every three to six months.
  • Cogged belts: These belts have teeth and fit into a sprocket on the brush roll. These need to be replaced every one to two years.
  • V-belts: These have a taper that fits grooves in the brush roll, and they should be replaced every one to two years.
