Replacing the spark plug on your MTD hedge trimmer

  • Wear work gloves to protect your hands and work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
  • Using a spark plug wrench, unthread and remove the spark plug from the engine cylinder. Don't let debris fall into the cylinder while you have the spark plug removed.
  • Using a spark plug gap tool, set the spark plug gap according to the specification provided in your owner's manual for the hedge trimmer.
  • Carefully thread the spark plug into the engine and tighten the spark plug firmly using the spark plug wrench.
  • Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

MTD hedge trimmer maintenance tips

  • Replace the spark plug. Replace the spark plug in your hedge trimmer each year so the engine starts easily and runs smoothly.
  • Replace the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter in the gas tank if the engine begins sputtering. A clogged fuel filter won't let gas flow to the carburetor.
  • Adjust the carburetor. Adjust the carburetor if the engine won't idle when you release the throttle trigger or when the blades move as the engine idles. Follow the directions in the owner's manual to adjust the idle speed screw.
  • Rebuild the carburetor. If the engine wont' start or run smoothly, rebuild the carburetor to make sure the engine gets the fuel it needs.
