Shear pin 738-04124A connects the auger to the rotating drive shaft. The shear pin is made of soft metal that purposely shears off or breaks to protect the transmission and motor if a foreign object or hard-packed snow binds the auger.

What's to say? It's a shear pin, a deliberate weak point designed to fail before more severe damage can occur. I do wish the securing clip was included, but a cotter pin works just fine.

Replacing the shear pins was easy but I needed to purchase the clips that hold the pins in place from the local hardware store.
