MTD Gas Snowthrower 31AE640F062 FAQs

To start your MTD gas snowthrower model 31AE640F062, set the controls to a safe “ready” position, turn the fuel on (if equipped), set throttle to FAST, use choke and primer for a cold start, then pull the recoil starter until the engine runs smoothly and gradually move the choke to OFF. See the owner's manual for the exact control locations on your unit.

Before you start (quick safety and setup)
  • Disengage the auger and traction (drive) controls before starting.
  • Make sure the spark plug wire is firmly attached to the spark plug.
  • If your unit has a fuel shut-off valve, set it to OPEN (vertical).
  • Let the machine adjust to outdoor temperature before clearing snow.
  • Handle gasoline safely; refuel only with the engine off and cooled.
Recoil start steps (pull-cord start)
  1. Move the throttle control to FAST.
  2. Insert the ignition key fully; do not turn the key.
  3. Set the choke:
    • Cold engine: FULL choke
    • Warm engine: choke OFF
  4. Press the primer:
    • Cold engine: 3 to 4 times
    • Warm engine: 1 time
    • Cover the primer vent hole while pressing.
  5. Pull the starter handle:
    • Pull slowly until you feel resistance, then let it rewind slowly.
    • Pull rapidly; repeat until the engine starts.
  6. As the engine warms and runs evenly, rotate the choke slowly to OFF.
If it will not start (common fixes)
  • No ignition: confirm the key is inserted and the spark plug wire is seated.
  • Flooded engine: move choke to OFF, wait a few minutes, then try again with less priming.
  • Hard pulling or no fire: check for stale fuel and verify throttle is at FAST.
  • Below 15°F: additional priming can be needed; follow the same primer technique.
Control settings at a glance
Engine condition Throttle Choke Primer
Cold start FAST FULL 3 to 4 pushes
Warm restart FAST OFF 1 push
Why it matters

Starting with the auger and traction controls disengaged and using the correct choke and primer settings helps the engine start faster, reduces flooding, and prevents unexpected movement when the engine fires.

The best gas-powered snowblower is the one that matches your snowfall depth, driveway size, and surface type. For most homeowners, a two-stage gas snowblower is the best all-around choice for packed snow and plow berms; use your 31AE640F062 operator's manual to confirm safe operation and adjustments.

How to choose the “best” gas snowblower for your needs

Use these factors to pick the right machine type and features:

  • Snow depth and density: light, fluffy snow vs wet, heavy snow
  • Clearing width: wider clears faster, but can be harder to maneuver
  • Drive system: self-propelled with multiple speeds is best for long driveways
  • Start method: recoil start vs electric start (needs a grounded 3-wire extension cord)
  • Surface type: pavement vs gravel (gravel needs higher scraper clearance)
  • Control features: chute direction control, easy-access shear pins, headlight
Single-stage vs two-stage (quick comparison)
Type Best for Pros Tradeoffs
Single-stage Small areas, lighter snow Lighter, simpler Struggles with deep, packed snow and plow berms
Two-stage Most driveways, heavier snow Better throwing power and intake Heavier, more maintenance
What “best” looks like for an MTD gas snowthrower owner

If you already own an MTD 31AE640F062, the “best” upgrade is often getting it set up correctly for your conditions and keeping wear items fresh.

Setup that improves performance immediately
  • Set skid shoes to match your surface; lower for close clearing, higher for uneven areas
  • Avoid gravel operation when possible; loose gravel can be picked up and thrown
  • Check tire pressure and keep both tires equal; typical target is 15 to 20 PSI
  • Disengage clutch levers before starting
  • Let the engine and machine adjust to outdoor temperature before clearing
Parts that commonly affect clearing quality
Symptom Common cause Example part on this model
Leaves snow behind, scrapes unevenly Worn scraper/shave plate Shave plate 790-00120-0637
Digs in or rides up Skid shoes set wrong or worn Skid shoe (listed for this model)
Auger does not pull snow in well Worn or slipping belt Belt (listed for this model)
Why it matters

Choosing the right snowblower type and keeping the scraper and skid shoe height set correctly improves traction, reduces clogging, and helps prevent surface damage. It also supports safer operation, especially around gravel and when using electric start.

The MTD 31AE640F062 gas snowthrower uses fresh, clean gasoline in the fuel tank (not a gas and oil mix). Use regular unleaded fuel and keep the fuel system clean because old fuel can cause hard starting and rough running; see the fuel and safety section in the owner's manual.

Fuel type and handling tips

To help your snowblower start easily and run smoothly, we recommend:

  • Use fresh unleaded gasoline from a clean, approved gas can
  • Do not fuel indoors
  • Do not add fuel while the engine is hot or running
  • Wipe up spills right away and change clothes if fuel gets on you
  • Keep the gas cap vent clear (ice and snow can block it)
How long gas can sit before it causes problems

The operator guidance for this model notes that fuel may not last over 30 days unless you use a fuel stabilizer. If the snowblower has been sitting, drain and refill with fresh fuel before troubleshooting deeper.

Situation What we recommend Why
Fuel is older than ~30 days Drain and refill with fresh gasoline Prevents varnish and starting issues
Engine runs erratic Clean fuel line; refill with clean fresh gasoline Fixes common fuel contamination problems
Loss of power Clear the gas cap vent hole Restores proper tank venting
Why it matters

Gasoline is extremely flammable and its vapors are explosive, so correct fueling practices protect you and your equipment. Fresh fuel also prevents common symptoms like stalling, surging, and poor power under load.
