What to do when your Kenmore canister vacuum isn't suctioning well

A weak suction motor, full vacuum bag, clog in the suction air path, dirty vacuum exhaust filter or leaky vacuum hose can prevent the vacuum cleaner from suctioning well.

Check the collection bag because debris won't get sucked up through the vacuum and into the collection bag efficiently when the bag is full. Empty the bag if it's full.

If your vacuum uses an exhaust filter, a clogged exhaust filter will prevent suction air from flowing through the vacuum efficiently. Check the exhaust filter and replace it if it's dirty.

Check the suction air path for a clog. Debris in the nozzle, hose or an internal pipe in the vacuum can inhibit suction air flow so remove any debris that you find blocking the suction air path.

Holes in the vacuum hose can diminish suction air flow through the nozzle because air gets sucked through hose holes instead of the nozzle. Replace the vacuum hose if it has holes.

How to replace the suction motor in your Kenmore canister vacuum

  • Unplug the power cord to disconnect the electrical supply to the vacuum.
  • Pull the release tab on the exhaust filter cover and lift the exhaust filter cover off the vacuum cleaner. Remove the exhaust filter from the housing.
  • Pull the plastic release tab on the front of the canister and lift the canopy hood. Remove the hood from the canister.
  • Remove the screws that secure the motor cover and remove the cover.
  • With the wires still attached, carefully lift the suction motor out of the canister. Remove the foam padding that surrounds the motor. Note the location of the wires and then disconnect them. Remove the motor and set aside for disposal.
  • Connect the wires to the new motor. Wrap the foam padding around the motor and then slide the motor into the canister.
  • Reinstall the motor cover, insert the screws and tighten firmly. Snap the hood into place on the canister. Reinstall the exhaust filter in the housing at the back of the canister. Snap the exhaust filter cover into place.
