GE washer won't start

If your washer won't start, several potential issues could be causing the problem. First, check if the lid or door is fully closed, as a broken lid switch or door lock assembly can prevent the cycle from starting. For washers with electronic controls, an error code might appear on the display. Use our GE washer error code charts to diagnose and fix the issue.

In top-load washers, a failed water inlet valve or water-level pressure switch can prevent the washer from filling, causing it not to start. Issues with the timer, machine control board, or motor control board could also be at fault. Inspect these components and replace any that are malfunctioning.

GE washer won't fill

If your washer won't fill, the water inlet valve might be defective or clogged. Make sure the water supply is turned on and check the hoses for kinks or blockages. A failed water-level pressure switch can also prevent the washer from filling properly. Replace faulty components to restore normal operation.

GE washer won't drain

A washer won't drain issue could be due to a clogged drain hose or a malfunctioning drain pump. First, check the drain hose for blockages or kinks that restrict water flow. If the hose is clear, the drain pump may need to be replaced. Other possible causes include a defective lid switch or control board.

Commonly replaced GE washer parts

When repairing your GE washer, you may need to replace key components, such as:

  • Agitator. Essential for moving clothes in top-load washers, the agitator may need replacing if it's cracked or the agitate dogs are damaged.
  • Door boot. This gasket on front-load washers prevents leaks and should be replaced if torn or worn.
  • Drain pump. A crucial component for removing water during the cycle, the drain pump may fail over time and require replacement.
  • Drive belt. Found in both top-load and front-load washers, the drive belt powers the spin basket and agitator. Replace it if it’s worn or broken.
  • Door lock assembly. This component secures the washer door during operation and signals the control board when it’s locked or unlocked.

At Sears PartsDirect, we provide the genuine GE washer parts you need to tackle DIY repairs with confidence. Our detailed diagrams and repair resources make it easy to identify and replace faulty parts.

If you prefer professional repair assistance, schedule a service appointment with Sears Home Services. Our experienced technicians will diagnose and fix the issue to get your washer running smoothly again.
