There are many reasons why your microwave might not turn on. When components of a microwave go bad, there is actually a built-in safety feature that prevents the microwave from turning on until that particular component is repaired.

Try these useful tips to get your microwave working again

  • Make sure that your microwave is plugged into a working outlet and the cord plug is completely inserted in the electrical outlet.
  • Check to see if a tripped circuit breaker is preventing the electrical outlet from getting power.
  • Try resetting your microwave by unplugging the power cord for 60 seconds and then plugging the cord back in to restore power. This will reboot the electronic control board and the microwave may begin working.
  • Check to make sure that the door of the microwave is closing completely when you shut it.
  • If there seems to be an issue with the touchpad, try testing each button separately to make sure each one is following the command correctly.

The microwave parts commonly known to break

  • Door switch—The door switch is the device that is pushed in when you close the microwave door. It lets the other microwave components know that the door has been shut and that the microwave can be used.
  • Ceramic fuse—The ceramic fuse shuts off the microwave if an internal electrical short circuit occurs. When the ceramic fuse blows, the microwave will not work at all.
  • Thermal fuse or thermal cut out—The thermal fuse (also known as thermal cut out) is a critical part of the microwave that prevents the microwave from overheating.
  • Cooling fan—The cooling fan keeps the microwave at the correct temperature so it doesn’t overheat. If this part breaks, the thermal fuse or thermal cut out often trips.
  • Door latch assembly—The door latch assembly is made up of plastic hooks that are part of the door and work in conjunction with the door switch when the door is closed. If there is a problem with the door latch assembly, it might not activate the door switch and the microwave won’t start.
  • Magnetron—The magnetron is the part that provides the heat the microwave generates to cook your food.
  • High-voltage diode—The high-voltage diode is the part that supplies power to the magnetron. If your microwave powers on but is not heating properly, then this could be the part that is causing the problem.
