Troubleshooting microwave problems

If your GE microwave isn’t working properly, here are some common issues and tips for troubleshooting.

  • No power. Make sure the microwave is plugged into a working electrical outlet. If the outlet doesn’t have power, reset the house circuit breaker. If the outlet is functional but the microwave still won’t power up, a broken power cord or failed electronic control board could be the problem.
  • Turntable won’t move. Check the control settings, as some models allow you to turn off turntable rotation. If the turntable still won’t move when set to rotate, the turntable motor may need to be replaced.
  • Fan won’t turn off. Many microwave hoods have a temperature sensor that automatically turns on the exhaust fan when heat from the cooktop is detected. If the fan continues running without heat from below, the temperature sensor may need to be replaced.
  • GE microwave not heating. If your GE microwave isn't heating, it could be due to a blown fuse. Before replacing the fuse, make sure to follow safety precautions. For guidance, check our article on how to replace a microwave fuse.

Safety Warning: Before attempting any troubleshooting or repairs on your microwave, always unplug it to avoid the risk of electric shock. Be aware that high-voltage capacitors inside the microwave can retain a lethal electrical charge even when the unit is unplugged. For safety, it’s best to have a professional handle repairs involving internal components.

Common microwave replacement parts

  • Air filters. Replace damaged or overly clogged aluminum mesh filters and charcoal filters as directed in the owner’s manual.
  • Light bulbs. Burned-out interior or cooktop lights can be replaced following the owner’s manual instructions.
  • Glass turntable tray. If you drop and break the tray, order a new one to keep your microwave functioning properly.
  • Door handles. Door handles may crack or break over time. Note that replacing a door handle often requires professional service due to the door’s essential shielding components.
