How to fix your Crosley gas cooktop when spark igniters keep clicking

A stuck burner spark igniter switch can cause a constant ticking or clicking noise on the cooktop. The igniter switches can get wet and short out when you clean the cooktop with water, and the ticking sometimes stops once the switches dry. If the spark igniter still won't stop clicking after the switches are completely dry, replace the failed burner switch.

Some cooktops have a spark module that reignites the burner if a burner flame goes out with that burner's gas valve still open. If your cooktop has this type of burner reignition system and the igniters click constantly with all active burner flames lit, you may need to replace the spark module because it isn't detecting the burner flames properly or a reignition relay on the spark module is stuck.

How to replace a bad igniter switch on your Crosley gas cooktop

  • Unplug the cooktop's power cord from the wall outlet and then close the gas supply shut-off valve.
  • Remove all the cooktop grates and then lift the gas burner caps off the burner heads. Remove the screws that hold the burner heads in place and then remove the burner heads.
  • Pull the control knobs off of the burner control valves. Remove the screws that secure the main top to the top of the burner orifice holders. Lift the main top off of the cooktop and set it aside.
  • Pull the spark igniter switch off of the burner control valve and disconnect its wires.
  • Push the new igniter switch onto the stem of the burner control valve and connect the wires.
  • Position the main top on top of the burner orifice holders. Insert and tighten the screws that secure the main top to the orifice holders. Push the control knobs on the burner control valves.
  • Position the burner heads in the correct locations, screw them into place and tighten the screws firmly. Cover the burner heads with the burner caps in the correct locations. Set the grates in place on the cooktop.
  • Plug the power cord into the wall outlet and open the gas shut-off valve.
