Troubleshooting tips for your Craftsman outboard motor when it won't start

  • Make sure that your fuel tank if full and it has fresh gasoline. Stale gas won't start the engine.
  • Check the fuel line connection. Reconnect the fuel line if it's loose. Replace the fuel line if it's damaged.
  • An air lock can prevent the engine from starting. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor then reconnect the fuel line to eliminate an air lock.
  • Make sure that the safety lanyard is connected to the emergency stop switch on the motor.
  • Check the vent screw on the fuel tank cap. The fuel tank vent must be open to start and run the engine.
  • A clogged carburetor will prevent the engine from starting. Clean or rebuild the carburetor if it's dirty.

Top-selling Craftsman boating product parts

  • Spark plug. The spark plug ignites the fuel inside the cylinder of an outboard engine.
  • Carburetor rebuild kit. The carburetor rebuild kit contains the seals, gaskets and other parts needed to clean and rebuild a clogged carburetor.
  • Ignition coil. The ignition coils provides spark plug with electrical current to start and run the engine.
