Frequently-replaced parts in Kelvinator electric ranges

  • Electronic oven control board. The electronic oven control (EOC) board governs the timing and execution of oven functions in the range. It's usually attached to the control panel and often has a digital display clock mounted on the front of its housing.
  • Outer oven door glass panel. The outer oven door glass panel is the heat-resistant piece of glass that forms the outer part of the oven door.
  • Oven door hinges. The hinges on an oven door control the rate at which the door opens and also allow the door to stay open at an angle. Hinges are usually installed in pairs so the hinges and tension springs match, ensuring the smooth operation of the door.
  • Oven door lock assembly. The oven door lock assembly is a safety mechanism that prevents accidental burns and oven fires by latching the door shut during self-cleaning. The door unlocks when the oven cools to a safe temperature (usually less than 200 degrees F). It's also used on ovens with the child lock-out feature. The assembly includes the lock and switches that detect whether the door is locked.
  • Bake element. The bake element is at the bottom of an electric oven and provides heat for baking.

Replacing the oven door switch in your Kelvinator electric range

  • Unplug the range or shut off the circuit breakers for the range.
  • Open the oven door completely and remove the screws from the bottom front lip of the glass cooktop frame. Carefully pull the cooktop assembly slightly forward to release the front lip of the glass cooktop frame from the front cabinet support bracket. Raise the front of the cooktop slightly to release the frame sides from the front support bracket then pull the cooktop forward to release the hinge tabs from the slots in the backguard. Lift the front edge of the glass cooktop and prop it open. Place the prop at the front of the range under the center of the cooktop’s front lip where it's steady, so the cooktop won't fall. Avoid damaging the oven cavity insulation when propping open the glass cooktop.
  • Disconnect the wires from the oven door switch. Use a slot screwdriver to release the locking tabs and pull the oven door switch out of the range frame. Push the new oven door switch into the range frame. Connect the wires to the new oven door switch.
  • Carefully remove the prop that's supporting the cooktop and lower the cooktop. Tuck the front lip of the cooktop frame under the front cabinet support bracket and lower the sides of the cooktop frame over the ends of the front support bracket. Push the cooktop back, inserting the hinge tabs into the backguard slots. Reinstall the mounting screws in the front lip of the cooktop frame. Close the oven door.
  • Plug the range back into the electrical wall outlet or turn on the house circuit breakers for the range.
