Common Williams furnace parts that you may need to replace

  • Thermostat. The thermostat senses room temperature and turns the furnace on and off to maintain the set temperature in your home. Replace the thermostat if it doesn't turn the furnace on and off properly.
  • Thermocouple. The thermocouple is a safety device that detects whether your furnace's pilot light is lit. The thermocouple contains a metal rod that is placed very close to the pilot light's flame. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple won't send current to the control to open the gas valve and ignite the burner. Replace the thermocouple if it isn't properly detecting whether the pilot is lit.
  • Gas valve. The gas valve controls gas flow to the burner. Replace the gas valve if it doesn't open to ignite the burner.
  • Pilot burner. The pilot burner ignites the gas for the main burner when the gas valve opens. Replace the pilot burner if it won't stay lit.
  • Main burner. The main burner heats ventilation air. Replace the main burner if it's damaged or corroded.

How to troubleshoot your Williams furnace when it won't heat

  • Check the gas supply cut-off valve to make sure it's fully open. Open the valve if you find it shut.
  • Check the thermostat setting. Turn the temperature dial on the thermostat to a position calling for heat to see if the thermostat works. Replace the thermostat if it doesn't turn on the furnace.
  • Make sure the pilot burner is lit. Follow the instructions in your owner's manual for lighting the pilot. Replace the pilot if it won't stay lit.
  • Shut off the gas supply and check the burner orifice. Clean the burner orifice if it's clogged.
  • Shut off electrical power to the furnace and check wiring connections on the thermostat, pilot light and gas valve connections. Reconnect any loose wires and repair any broken wires.
  • Replace the gas valve if it doesn't open to ignite the burner.
