Replacing the ignition switch in your Yard King front-engine lawn tractor

  • Park the tractor on a level surface and set the parking brake. Turn the ignition switch off and remove the key.
  • Wear work gloves to protect your hands. Lift the seat. Remove the bolt connecting the negative cable to the battery and tuck the cable away from the battery so it doesn't touch the battery post.
  • Lift the hood to access the back of the ignition switch. Release the locking tabs and push the switch out though the front of the dash. Disconnect the wire harness attached to the back of the ignition switch; if it's difficult to unplug, wiggle the plug as you pull on it. Remove the ignition switch.
  • Connect the wire harness to the back of the ignition switch. Push the new ignition switch into the dash and engage the locking tabs. Lower the hood.
  • Reconnect the negative cable to the negative battery terminal. Lower the seat.

Yard King front-engine lawn tractor common replacement parts

  • Seat switch. The seat switch recognizes whether you are sitting on the seat. If the seat switch doesn't detect you in the seat when you release the brake, the switch kills the engine. To prevent tampering, the seat switch also kills the engine when you release the brake if you unplug the seat switch wire harness.
  • Starter motor. The starter motor spins the flywheel to start the engine when you turn the key to the start position.
  • Oil filter. An oil filter is a filter designed to remove contaminants from engine oil, transmission oil, lubricating oil or hydraulic oil.
  • Idler tension spring. The idler tension spring is used to pull the idler arm back to tighten the belt. The spring will usually connect to the idler arm on one end, and to the frame on the other.
  • Ground drive belt. The ground drive belt connects the engine crankshaft to the transaxle pulley to drive the rear wheels.
