To install the spring you have to remove the rear wheel to access the the shift handle attachment point to the frame. The bracket has to be remove to access the two cotter pins that need to be removed in order to remove the old spring and install the new. Be sure new spring is placed on the shift rod in the proper direction so that the one end of the spring goes around the shift rod and the smaller end clips around the notch in the bracket. It just takes some ingenuity in figuring out the position of the spring. Reassembly is tricky because now the spring is putting the shift rod and bracket in tension for its attachment to the tractor frame. You will need new cotter pins for reinstallation of the shift rod.
