This was an easy repair -- Remove only the top 6 screws from the inside of the door, pull the old panel forward and remove the latch mechanism, the white plastic cover and control panel; repeat in reverse to install the replacement.
After many years of daily use, my old original panel had cracked and peeling button covers and broken sockets for the screws that held it in place, and that damage meant it was no longer holding the latch mechanism securely.
At the same time I replaced my worn latch assembly and a failed thermal relay (which you'll find tucked into the edge of the control circuit board), which was the original reason for opening up the unit.
