Troubleshooting microwave problems

If your GE microwave isn’t working, here are some suggestions to help you identify the problem.

  • No power. Make sure the microwave is plugged into a working electrical outlet. If the outlet doesn’t have power, reset the house circuit breaker for the outlet.

    If the outlet has power but the microwave won’t power up, a broken power cord or failed electronic control board could be causing the problem.

  • Turntable won’t move. Some microwave controls allow you to turn off the turntable rotation, so check the control settings. If the turntable won’t move even though the control is set to rotate the turntable, the turntable motor may be broken. Replace the turntable motor if it doesn’t work.

  • Fan won’t turn off. Microwave hoods typically have a temperature sentry feature that turns on the exhaust fan when the temperature sensor detects high heat from the cooktop. The fan stays on until temperature above the cooktop goes down. If the exhaust fan runs constantly even though you’re not using the cooktop, the temperature sensor for the sentry feature may need to be replaced.

Common microwave replacement parts

  • Air filters. Microwave hoods use aluminum mesh air filters to trap grease from exhaust air. While these filters are washable, they aren’t indestructible. Replace the aluminum mesh filters if they’re damaged or too clogged to clean.

    Microwave hoods that recirculate air back into the kitchen space instead of outside the home use a charcoal filter that removes smoke and odors from the recirculated air. Replace these charcoal filters every 6 months or as directed in the owner’s manual.

  • Light bulbs. Interior lights and cooktop lights burn out over time. Order the correct replacement bulb and follow the directions in the owner’s manual for replacing the bub.

  • Glass turntable tray. Accidents happen. If you drop and break the glass turntable tray while cleaning it, order a replacement tray.

  • Door handles. The door handle of your microwave can crack or break eventually. On many microwaves, a service technician must replace the door handle because the repair involves disassembly of the door, which has essential shielding components.
