Quick and easy though risky repair.

Symptom: no front panel response after lightning strike took out coffee maker on nearby outlet. An easy 6 top screws panel removal revealed the original control board obviously seriously destroyed by the lightning spike - the board's surge suppressing varistor was blown apart putting a layer of black soot on adjacent components. Electronics expert advice would be to NOT replace since other parts in the machine were likely affected as well. But, considering the cost of a new dishwasher, and that except for indicator LEDs, the other components were probably passive, we decided that trying a new control board was worth a gamble. Replacement was easy once we noticed that ribbon cables coming in from side had retaining hooks that took light pressure to push down out of the way while removing the old board. There is also a disk shaped part that is most easily removed from its clip by pushing it sideways. Apparently the board is a general purpose design that can be used in a lot of different washers with different features so extra care was needed inserting an end ribbon cable with the proper offset ' clearly indicated on the board lettering. It looks like we got lucky. We had a scare when the first load stuck on an endless final rinse that got steaming hot and had to be cancelled to finis and drain. Perhaps we confused things by checking too often and were thinking we could only use it with manual intervention or further repair. However, the next cycle worked and everything continues to work normally after several loads. Unless another part was weakened by the lightning surge we may get another 5 years out of an appliance we are familiar and happy with.
