I replaced the Resin beads and a couple mechanical parts and many O rings

you need a good funnel, then it is easy
replace resin beads for water softener. a good wet dry shop vac makes this really easy. Have a second person help with the weight of emptying the vac.into a plastic garbage bag that is lining a cardboard box,

A bit involved, but doable with research
Easy after watching this vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH0o71luLX0 Watch before you decide to do it... you may need more parts. My softener is working great now, at 1 third the cost of replacement. Whirlpool, GE and sears have same mechanicals. The clamped opening on these softeners make it much easier,

Good experience but a little messy!
So grateful I decided to take the leap and repair my water softener. Our water pressure was zero when the softener was running. It turned out to be due to the resin being old. Our softener is 12 years old but now it runs really well again. No need for a new one! The part cost 145 after shipping and tax but a replacement would have been $550+ for just the softener, not including installation.

Replaced Resin instead of purchasing New Softener
A little tricky to thoroughly remove old resin, & then fill up the resin tank with new material. Watched another DIYer perform the exchange of resin on You Tube ...... saved a lot of $ by not having to buy a completely new softener. Purchased bag of resin from Sears at fair price & quick shipping.

Tedious work
It was not a complex job, just long and tedious. Had to disconnect pluming and wiring, vacuum water and old resin out of tank and add 52 lbs of new resin a scoop at a time, then put everything back together and clean up. Took me more than 3 hours. I can see why a plumber would charge big bucks to do the work.
