Range: Why isn't my range working?

If the range doesn't work at all, it's likely that the range has no electrical power for the display or controls. Possible causes are a tripped house circuit breaker for the range, a problem with the outlet cord (not plugged in or broken) or an internal wiring failure. A blown thermal fuse can prevent the control from powering up on some ranges. Some ranges have a relay control board that supplies power to the display and controls so a failed relay control board could prevent the range from working.

For an electric range that won't power up, check the terminal block on the back of the range for loose wires or broken terminals. Replace the terminal block if damaged.

JC-RA-Replace-the-range-electronic-oven-control-board

Replace the range electronic oven control board

The electronic oven control (EOC) board governs the timing and execution of oven functions such as baking and broiling. It's usually in the control console and often has a digital clock on the front of its housing. Replace the electronic control board if it doesn't light up when it's supplied with electrical power, if it doesn't operate properly or doesn't properly send voltage to the bake or broil element (in an electric oven) or burner (in a gas oven).

JC-RA-Replace-the-range-relay-control-board

Replace the range relay control board

Some ranges have a relay control board that's separate from electronic control board. The relay board has electrical relays that control voltage going to major loads such as the bake element or a surface element, based on signals from the control board. Replace the relay control board if it fails to properly control voltage to a component.

JC-RA-Reset-or-replace-the-range-thermal-fuse

Reset or replace the range thermal fuse

Many range ovens have a bi-metal thermal fuse-also called a thermal limit switch-that protects the oven from overheating. The oven thermal fuse trips when the temperature in the oven gets too hot. After the thermal fuse trips, the oven won't heat. If the thermal fuse trips after the self-cleaning cycle, try resetting the fuse by turning off electricity to the range, removing the exterior back panel, and pushing the reset button. If the fuse tripped during normal operation, replace it. If the problem persists, the electronic oven control board might require replacement. Reset the thermal fuse after replacing the control board.

Replace the range terminal block for the power cord

This terminal block is located on the back of the range. it's the connection point for incoming power to the range from the power cord. It has heavy connection terminals that can handle the high incoming current load needed to operate the oven and stove top elements. A short circuit in the wiring could damage the terminal block and it should be replaced.
