7 tips for the ultimate summer grilling experience

Whether you're new to grilling or already the go-to pitmaster on your block, there's always room to sharpen your skills. These seven easy tips can help you level up your technique, get better results from your grill, and avoid common barbecue blunders. From searing steaks to cleaning grates, we've got you covered for grilling season.

1. Start with a sear

One of the biggest mistakes grillers make is cooking everything over high heat from start to finish. Instead, start by searing meat over high heat to lock in flavor and get that crave-worthy crust. Then move it to indirect heat to finish cooking more gently. You’ll still get that smoky grilled taste, but your food will stay juicy, not tough or dry.

2. Always use clean platters

This one’s easy to forget but super important. Don’t put cooked food back on the same plate that held raw meat. It might seem harmless, but it can lead to cross-contamination and make someone sick. Use one platter for raw food and a clean one for cooked. Simple and safe.

3. Organize your grill top

Think of your grill like a stovetop with zones. Designate different areas for meats, fish, veggies, and a low-heat zone for warming. This helps prevent flavor transfer and makes it easier to manage special diets or picky eaters. Plus, it gives you better control over timing and doneness.

4. Use foil to reduce hot spots

Before you preheat your gas grill, try this trick: line the bottom with foil (under the burners). Just remove the grate and burner units, then add a sheet of foil. It helps reflect heat and creates a more even cooking surface, so you’re not left with some burgers burned and others barely warm.

5. Don’t forget the veggies

Grilled vegetables are underrated. A simple way to prep asparagus: toss it in a plastic bag with olive oil, chopped garlic, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Shake to coat, then place it on the grill crosswise so the stalks don’t slip through. Delicious, fast, and a hit with guests.

6. Let your meat rest before slicing

We know - it smells amazing and you’re hungry. But resist the urge to slice right away. Letting your meat rest for a few minutes after grilling allows the juices to redistribute. This small pause makes a big difference in flavor and texture, especially with thicker cuts.

7. Clean your grill

Last but definitely not least, clean your grill after each use. Turn up the heat to burn off stuck-on food, then use a stiff brush to scrub the grates. This keeps your food tasting great, prevents flare-ups, and extends the life of your grill. For deep cleans, check out our tips for how to clean your gas grill.
