Where to find the model and serial number on your cooktop
Start by locating the model and serial number label on your Kenmore cooktop. On most models, both numbers appear together on the same label.
Common locations include:
On the underside of the cooktop housing
On the side of the cooktop chassis, visible from below
On a label attached to the frame beneath the control area
The model number usually starts with three digits, followed by a period and additional numbers. Those first three digits determine which serial number format you’ll use to find the production date.
If your cooktop’s model number starts with 363
Kenmore cooktops with model numbers starting with 363 use a serial number format where the production date is encoded at the start of the serial number using letters.
Serial number format for Kenmore models starting with 363
The serial number typically begins with two letters:
First letter = month
Second letter = year
This format provides the month and year the cooktop was built.
Year and month code reference (1990 and newer)
| Letter | Month (first letter) | Possible years (second letter) |
|---|
| A | January | 2001, 2013, 2025 |
| D | February | 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026 |
| F | March | 1991, 2003, 2015 |
| G | April | 1992, 2004, 2016 |
| H | May | 1993, 2005, 2017 |
| L | June | 1994, 2006, 2018 |
| M | July | 1995, 2007, 2019 |
| R | August | 1996, 2008, 2020 |
| S | September | 1997, 2009, 2021 |
| T | October | 1998, 2010, 2022 |
| V | November | 1999, 2011, 2023 |
| Z | December | 2000, 2012, 2024 |
Choosing the correct year
Because letter codes repeat over time, use the cooktop’s control layout, features, and overall styling to determine which year makes sense.
For cooktops beginning with 628 or 790
Kenmore cooktops with model numbers starting with 628 or 790 typically use a serial number format where the production date appears near the beginning of the serial number.
Serial number format
YWWxxxxx
Example:
A serial number beginning with 923 indicates a cooktop built in week 23 of a year ending in 9.
Because only the last digit of the year is shown, use the cooktop’s design, controls, and features to determine the correct decade.
If the model number starts with 664 or 665
Kenmore cooktops with model numbers starting with 664 or 665 use a serial number format where the production date is encoded near the beginning of the serial number.
Start by looking at the first four or five characters.
Common serial number format
LLYWWxxxxx or LYWWxxxxx
First one or two letters = production location
Next character (letter or number) = year
Next two digits = week of production
The year is shown as a single character, and the pattern repeats every 30 years.
Year code reference table
| Codes 0–9 | Years | Codes X–J | Years | Codes K–Y | Years |
|---|
| 0 | 1980 / 2010 / 2040 | X | 1990 / 2020 / 2050 | K | 2000 / 2030 / 2060 |
| 1 | 1981 / 2011 / 2041 | A | 1991 / 2021 / 2051 | L | 2001 / 2031 / 2061 |
| 2 | 1982 / 2012 / 2042 | B | 1992 / 2022 / 2052 | M | 2002 / 2032 / 2062 |
| 3 | 1983 / 2013 / 2043 | C | 1993 / 2023 / 2053 | N | 2003 / 2033 / 2063 |
| 4 | 1984 / 2014 / 2044 | D | 1994 / 2024 / 2054 | P | 2004 / 2034 / 2064 |
| 5 | 1985 / 2015 / 2045 | E | 1995 / 2025 / 2055 | R | 2005 / 2035 / 2065 |
| 6 | 1986 / 2016 / 2046 | F | 1996 / 2026 / 2056 | T | 2006 / 2036 / 2066 |

| 8 | 1988 / 2018 / 2048 | H | 1998 / 2028 / 2058 | W | 2008 / 2038 / 2068 |
| 9 | 1989 / 2019 / 2049 | J | 1999 / 2029 / 2059 | Y | 2009 / 2039 / 2069 |
Examples:
RA01xxxx = was made in the first week of either 1991 or 2021.
FM644xxxx = was made in the 44th week of either 1986 or 2016.
Choosing the correct year
Because the year code repeats every 30 years, use the cooktop’s controls, features, and design details to determine the correct decade.
Confirm the age before repairing or replacing
After decoding the production date, make sure it lines up with the cooktop’s condition and performance.
Helpful cross-checks include:
Whether the age fits the cooktop’s control layout and features
Whether heating performance and wear match the estimated timeframe
Whether the design aligns with the decoded production date
If something doesn’t add up, revisit the serial number format before making a repair or replacement decision.
