It was not the correct part
It would have been easy if it was the correct part. What troubles me more is the proper parts, motor brushes, are not available. My vacuum is not that old and being a home shop vacuum, not used frequently. This seems to be a manufacturing defect because of the two factory installed brushes, one is in perfect condition but the other has really deteriorated. I'm stuck buying a new vacuum and disposing of the other, not so old unit that does not work.
