Quick tips and fixes: range hot surface light troubleshooting video

less than a minute readMar 09Lyle Weischwill

This short, animated video shows how to find out which element on your stovetop is broken, causing the Hot Surface light to stay on even after all the elements are off and they’ve cooled down.

For more DIY help with your electric or gas range, check out our range repair page for troubleshooting tips and videos, repair guides and error code charts.

When you turn on the stovetop an element switch trips to turn on the Hot Surface light.

When you turn off the element the switch turns off as the element cools.

If the Hot Surface light always stays on, a switch is stuck. To find the stuck switch unplug the range and lift the cooktop. Disconnect the switch wires and measure continuity.

A measurement of OL (open load) means the switch is okay. Continue checking switches. When you find the switch that measures 0 ohms, you know that switch is bad.

Once you replace that element, you've solved the problem.
