How to use basic snowblower controls video

less than a minute readOct 28Wayne Archer

This video explains the basic snowblower controls and shows how to operate a snowblower safely and efficiently. You’ll learn how to use the shift lever, choke, throttle, primer, starter, chute, ignition, and more, along with how to check the oil before you start clearing snow.

For advice on diagnosing snowblower problems and installing replacement parts in your snowblower, see PartsDirect's snowblower repair help.

How to operate a snowblower

What does the snowblower shift control do?

The shift lever controls the snowblower’s direction and speed. The shift control is on the right side of the handle panel and has 8 positions:

  • 6 forward speeds; 1 is slowest and 6 is fastest.

  • 2 two reverse speeds; 1 is slow and 2 is fast

How to use the snowblower choke control

The choke control is the round knob on the back of the engine, below the rubber primer bulb. Turn the knob counterclockwise before starting the engine. Once the engine starts, turn the knob clockwise, until the engine runs smoothly. If the engine speed surges, the engine is not yet warm enough to operate without the choke.

What does the snowblower throttle control do?

The throttle control regulates speed of the engine. It’s the slide control to the right of the choke.

  • Move the control to the left to make the engine run faster.

  • Move the control to the right to slow the engine.

  • Move the control all the way to the right to stop the engine.

Where is the snowblower primer?

The primer is the rubber bulb on the rear of the engine, near the top. Pressing and releasing the primer forces fuel directly into the engine to aid in cold-weather starting.

How to add oil to the snowblower

The oil fill cap is the yellow knob, on the top of the engine, near the front. A dipstick is attached to the cap. Check the engine oil level and add oil added through the oil fill and dipstick tube hole.

How does the snowblower electric starter work?

On a snowblower with an electric starter, the starter button and outlet are on the right side of the engine. Press the starter button to engage the engine’s electric starter, when it’s plugged into a 120-volt power source.

Where is the snowblower key?

The snowblower key is attached to the D handle of the recoil starter. Use side cutters to remove the cable tie, to remove the key. A spare key is included in the package containing the manual.

You must fully install the snowblower key into the slot next to the primer blub for the engine to start. Don’t turn the key to start the engine, because you could break the key. Partially removing the key stops the engine. Remove the key when you’re not using the snowblower

How do I turn on the headlight?

If your snowblower has a headlight, it’s always on when the engine is running.

How to use the power steering

If your snowblower has power steering, the power steering trigger controls are on the bottom of each handle. Squeeze the right trigger control to turn right and squeeze the left control to turn left.

How does the auger control and drive control work?

The auger control is on the left handle. Squeeze the control grip against the handle to engage the auger and start blowing snow; release to stop.

The drive control is on the right handle. Squeeze the control grip against the handle to engage the wheel drive.

If you engage the auger control and drive control at the same time, you can release the auger control on the left handle, and the auger will remain engaged.

Release both controls to stop the auger and wheel drive.

Always release the drive control before changing speed to reduce wear on the drive system.

How do I change the direction of the snow discharge?

The electric chute control joystick is on the right side of the handle panel. To change the direction in which the snow is blown, move the joystick to the right or to the left. To change the angle or distance which snow is blown, pivot the joystick forward to tilt the chute downward and backward to tilt the chute up.

How to manually control the chute

If the electric chute control malefactions, you can disable the electric control and operate the chute manually:

  1. Remove the hairpin clip from the front end of the chute control rod.

  2. Push the chute control rod forward until the hole in it lines up with the front hole in the chute control head.

  3. Reinsert the hairpin clip through this hole and the chute control rod.

  4. Grasp the built-in crake of the chute control rod and manually rotate the chute to the left or to the right to the desired position.
