How to replace a snowblower shave plate video

less than a minute readOct 28Wayne Archer

Keeping your snowblower in good condition helps it clear snow efficiently and protect the surface beneath. Over time, the shave plate along the bottom of the auger housing wears down from contact with pavement and packed snow.

This video shows how to replace a snowblower shave plate safely and correctly. You’ll see how to remove the skid shoes, install the new plate, and adjust the height so your snowblower glides smoothly and leaves a clean path after every pass.

For advice on diagnosing snowblower problems and installing replacement parts in your snowblower, see PartsDirect's snowblower repair help.

Before performing any type of maintenance or service, remove the key from the snow thrower, disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Follow the maintenance schedule written in the operator's manual.

Some service procedures require you to tip the snow thrower up on the auger housing. If your snow thrower has drift cutters, you will have to move them out of the way.

  1. Remove the lower wing nut and the bolt of one of the drift cutters

  2. Loosen the upper wing nut and bolt

  3. Pivot the drift cutter down and retighten the wing nut

Do this for the other drift cutter.

To change the shave plate:

  1. Remove the fuel from the engine and tip the snow thrower up on the housing

  2. Remove the skid shoes

  3. Remove the carriage bolts and hex nuts that attach the shave plate to the snow thrower housing

  4. Note how the flange on the shave plate meets the auger housing

  5. Install the new shave plate, making sure the heads of the carriage bolts are to the inside of the housing; tighten securely

  6. Loosely install the skid shoes with the carriage bolts, washers and hex flange nuts

  7. Tip the snow thrower back down and set the skid shoes to the proper height
