There are some common problems that arise with power staplers. These issues will prevent the tool from working properly. Luckily, many of these problems can be fixed by repairing or replacing a part.

Troubleshooting tips for your stapler

There could be an issue with the amount of air entering into the tool. If the tool is being supplied with air but it's not firing, then there's most likely a problem with the staple drive system. If air is leaking, then it could be a number of problems. The first thing to do is check the various O-rings and see if air is leaking around them. If after checking the rings you notice air is leaking inside your gun, then there may be a problem with the piston or deflector.

Top five stapler parts that break

  1. Piston ram assembly—If your stapler is firing but not releasing a staple, then it could be due to a faulty piston ram. This may be due to moisture in the line, or it may need some oil. If you find that you're having to manually pull the piston ram up, you might need to get a new one.
  2. Deflector—The deflector allows for a certain amount of air to be used from the supply hose to drive the staple into whatever you're working on. If you notice that air is leaking from inside the stapler, you will potentially need a new deflector. The deflector can be adjusted for various amounts of air to enter the tool. Try adjusting the amount of airflow. If it's still leaking, replace the deflector.
  3. Staple load spring—The spring is what puts tension on the loaded staples in the gun's rail. The spring can wear out from use. If the stapler is jamming or not pushing the next staple down the rail, the spring may need to be adjusted or replaced.
  4. Guide plate—The guide plate is what aligns the staples and supports them as they're pushed to the end of the stapler. If you find that the stapler is jamming up, check the guide plate to make sure it's not bent. This can happen if it's dropped, and it may need to be replaced.
  5. Staples—If your gun is working properly but there are no staples firing, you may just be running low on staples. This might sound basic, but many issues have been solved by loading more staples. Also, problems can arise if you put the wrong staple size in your gun. Make sure to check the manufacturer's specs for your specific stapler.
