Mending typical equipment failures

  • Lawn edger won’t start—Before beginning troubleshooting, assure your edger’s gas tank is filled and it’s in the Start position. If the problem persists, then you may have a faulty spark plug. Check for any damage, and then use a tester to check the spark. If the plug is malfunctioning, then it will need to be replaced.
  • Line trimmer leaking gas—When a trimmer is leaking, you’ll want to check the fuel line in a well-ventilated area. If there are any cracks in the line, then it will need to be replaced.
  • Line trimmer runs rough—A fuel tank that contains old gas can cause your trimmer to run poorly. Try emptying the tank and adding fresh gas. This may solve the issue.
  • Leaf blower vibrates excessively—When a leaf blower is vibrating more than usual, it's often caused by a damaged fan blade. Check to see if the blade is broken and replace it if necessary.
  • Leaf blower smokes—A leaf blower that's smoking often needs a new air filter. Inspect the air filter for excessive oil and debris. Replace it to restore the engine to normal operation.

Essential lawn mower parts

Maintenance is key to keeping your walk-behind lawn mower in operating condition. Periodically tuning up your mower by cleaning and replacing components can go a long way to extending your mower's life.

  • Engine—You’ll want to change the oil in your engine regularly to avoid engine damage. Use an approved oil container to empty the contents of the engine. Clean the underside of your mower after the oil drains out. Refill the engine with fresh oil.
  • Air filter—A dirty air filter will not properly protect your engine from dirt and grime. Replace the air filter regularly and when you notice any issues with startup.
  • Spark plug—The spark plug is a primary component in igniting fuel in your engine. When an engine fails to start, you'll need to check the spark plug. Replace the spark plug if it's fouled or damaged.
  • Blade—A dull blade will not effectively cut your grass. If you notice uneven cuts, then it’s a good sign that it’s time to sharpen or replace the blade.
  • Wheels—The wheels of your mower are vital to keeping it moving. Naturally, after frequent use, the tires will begin to wear and possibly. They'll need to be replaced occasionally to keep your machine in working order.
