Lid switch 3949247 detects if the washer lid is open or closed and prevents the wash tub from spinning and agitating when the lid is open.
Unplug the washer and shut off the water supply before installing the lid switch. Wear work gloves to protect your hands during this repair.

Washer lid switch
Lid switch replacement for whirlpool washer. Don't ever call sears direct, but go to sears outlet store instead.

fairly easy
It took some learning to get to the old part to remove it. Installation was a simple reverse of the removal. Accessing the switch required the removal of both end caps of the control panel, removal of screws at each end, flip the control panel over the back, use a flat screwdriver to release the spring clips at each side, pull the case forward and lay it on the floor to access the part. The removal was then very simple: remove the two screws that held it, unclip the wire from the holders and the electrical connector from the case. The time factor involved doing it for the first time.
