How to Replace a Vacuum Beater Bar

This DIY repair guide explains how to replace the beater bar in a vacuum. The beater bar rotates in the power head, loosening dirt from carpet fibers. If the brush bristles are worn or the bar is damaged, the power head can't clean deeply. Replace the vacuum beater bar with the manufacturer-approved replacement part.

Before you begin

Unplug the vacuum cleaner from the wall outlet. Wear work gloves to protect your hands. Detach the power brush assembly from the wand and remove the floor brush attachment from the top of the power brush assembly if your model has one.

Instructions

 Warning: Undertaking repairs to appliances can be hazardous. Use the proper tools and safety equipment noted in the guide and follow all instructions. Do not proceed until you are confident that you understand all of the steps and are capable of completing the repair. Some repairs should only be performed by a qualified technician.

Step 1: Remove power brush assembly cover

Turn the power brush assembly upside down and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three screws that secure the cover. Turn the power brush assembly upright and remove the cover. 

Step 2: Remove the brush roll cover

Remove the two screws that secure the brush roll cover. Lift the cover off and set it aside.

Step 3: Replace the brush roll

Lift the brush roll out of the base and release it from the drive belt. Slip the new brush roll in the belt and push it into the base.

Step 4: Reinstall the brush roll cover

Reinstall the brush roll cover, insert the screws, and tighten firmly.

Step 5: Reinstall the power brush assembly cover

Reinstall the power brush assembly, insert the screws, and tighten firmly.
