Range Hood Common Parts Glossary

Blower fan blade

The blower fan blade rotates on the fan motor shaft. The fan blade moves air from the area above the cooktop, through the exhaust air duct system and then outside of the home.

Blower fan motor

The blower fan motor is an electric motor that rotates the blower fan blade. The blower fan motor is activated at various speeds by the selector switch or the electronic control board in the control panel.

Charcoal filter

The charcoal filter is used when exhaust air is recirculated into the kitchen instead of being exhausted outside the home. The charcoal filter removes odors from the recirculated air.

Control panel

The control panel is mounted on the front of the range hood. Selection switches or the user interface control board are fastened to the control panel. Display indicators are also mounted on the control panel.

Damper

The damper is a flapper in the exhaust duct system that hinges open to allow air flow in the exhaust direction only. When exhaust air isn’t flowing through the duct system, the damper shuts to prevent backflow of air through the system.

Downdraft Fan Control Switch

The fan control switch is on the right side of the pop-up vent. The fan control switch activates the blower motor at the selected speed.

Downdraft Up/Down button pad

The up/down button pad on the top of the vent covers and protects the up/down switch. Depress the up/down button pad to raise or lower the vent.

Downdraft air box

The air box is the main body of the downdraft vent. It houses the lift mechanism and routes air into the blower.

Downdraft blower motor

The blower motor spins the fan blade that removes smoke and steam from the cooktop area.

Downdraft blower wheel

The blower wheel is fastened to the blower motor and rotates when fan motor is running. The blower wheel moves air from the area above the cooktop, through the exhaust air duct system and outside of the home.

Downdraft gear motor

The gear motor raises and lowers the pop-up vent when you push the activation switch. Limit switches shut off the gear motor when the pop-up vent reaches its destination.

Downdraft grease filter

The grease filter is an aluminum mesh filter that traps grease suspended in the exhaust. The grease filter attaches at an angle inside the vent opening.

Downdraft limit switch

The limit switch detects the position of the pop-up vent and stops the gear motor from operating when the vent reaches the full up or down position.

Downdraft up/down switch

The up/down switch on the right side of the pop-up vent starts the gear motor to raise or lower the pop-up vent when pressed.

Electronic control board

The electronic control board activates the lights and blower fan motor in the range hood. The electronic control board receives selection input from the control panel or user interface control board.

Fan selector switch

The fan selector switch is mounted on the control panel. The fan selector switch activates the blower fan motor at the selected speed.

Grease filter

The grease filter is an aluminum mesh filter that traps grease that’s suspended in the exhaust air. The grease filter is mounted on the bottom of the range hood just under the exhaust fan.

Light socket

The light socket houses a light bulb that illuminates the cooktop under the range hood. The light socket is mounted on the underside of the range hood.

Light switch

The light switch activates the light bulbs under the range hood. The light switch is mounted on the control panel of the range hood.

Sentry system

The sentry system constantly monitors the ambient air temperature above the cooktop. When the air temperature rises above the sentry set point, the sentry system automatically turns on the range hood blower fan on High. The fan runs until the air temperature above the range decreases to a safe temperature.

Temperature sensor

The temperature sensor detects air temperature in the range hood. A wire harness connects the temperature sensor to the electronic control board.

Wire harness

The wire harness is a system of wires for various range hood components. The wires are bundled together so that they can be routed through the range hood efficiently and safely.
