Food Dehydrator Parts

A food dehydrator takes raw food and removes the moisture from it. Raw food has a significant amount of water contained inside, and this is removed by the heated air circulated around the food. The temperature is elevated inside the unit but not to the point of cooking it. You need to make certain that your dehydrator is operating properly because a simple problem could lead to bacterial contamination. Also, there are specific issues that arise due to parts not working. Your unit may function, but a particular problem with a step in the dehydrating process may require you to replace a part to fix the dehydrator.

Five common dehydrator parts explained

  1. Air baffle—The air baffle takes a direct airflow and disperses it across a larger surface area. The idea is to have the air move around as much surface area of the fruit or meat that you are dehydrating as possible. The air baffle can break or become dislodged from the main unit if dropped or bumped. If you notice uneven dehydration of your food, then the baffle may need to be replaced.
  2. Motor—The motor drives the fan blade, which causes the heated air to circulate through the dehydrator inside the frame. If the unit powers on but the fan is not spinning, then there may be a problem with the motor. It might need to be serviced or replaced.
  3. Frame—The frame helps enclose the food and helps direct air flow. If there are cracks or gaps in the frame, then it may need to be replaced or sealed to prevent leakage.
  4. Trays—Different models have a varying number of tray inserts in the dehydrator. The trays are where the fruit or dehydrating meat is placed. The trays can get dirty, become stained or crack during insertion or due to heat differentiation. Replace any tray that’s damaged.
  5. Heater assembly—The heater assembly is what regulates and generates the heat to help dry the dehydrating product out. The heater assembly normally keeps the temperature between 90 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. The heater assembly might need to be replaced if it doesn’t heat or you can’t adjust the heat during dehydration.
