Boiler Parts

Water heaters and boilers offer two sharply different approaches to the same task of heating water. Water heaters typically use one or two electric elements or a gas burner to heat water, whereas boilers are designed for high-capacity heating for commercial buildings or pools. As such, boilers may have a more complicated design and more internal parts, such as large amounts of copper tubes or multiple gas burners for heating, which may need repairing or replacing from time to time.

What's inside a boiler?

  1. Roll-out limit switch—This limit switch detects when the flame flares out the front of the burner box and shuts down the burner to prevent overheating and boiler damage. If this switch needs to be reset frequently, it should be replaced.
  2. Fuel oil filter—On oil-fired burners, the oil filter cleans the incoming oil before it is burned in order to remove any possible contaminants and keep the oil burning as cleanly as possible. If the filter is too dirty, it will restrict the flow of oil and needs to be replaced.
  3. Gas valve—The gas valve regulates the flow of oil or gas into a boiler. If the valve is faulty or dirty, it may limit the flow of fuel too much, which may damage the unit, and the valve will need to be replaced.
  4. Oil burner nozzle—The burner nozzle can sometimes get clogged with dirt or debris and should be cleaned or replaced if necessary. Otherwise, it may not burn properly and could impact the performance of the boiler.
  5. Thermocouple—The thermocouple is a device designed to detect the presence of a lit flame inside gas or oil boilers. It acts as a safety feature to cut the flow of gas in the event that the burners are not lit quickly; this prevents dangerous levels of gas, oil and other flammable fumes from building up.
