Professional landscapers rely on their Ryobi leaf blowers to remove grass clippings from driveways and sidewalks after mowing, just as homeowners depend on their machines to tidy up leaves in the fall. When your leaf blower runs rough during operation, however, it turns what was once a simple chore into a time-consuming task. Use these troubleshooting tips to address issues with your leaf blower running rough.

Change the Gasoline

Moisture inside the gas tank of your leaf blower or stale gas left over from a previous season can both cause rough operation. When gas has water in it or sits for long periods at a time, it doesn't combust properly. At the end of each season, be sure to drain out all of the gasoline out of the tank. Also drain and replace gasoline when the engine runs rough, either during start up or use.

Check the Fuel Lines

Fuel lines are leaf blower parts that feed fuel from the tank to the engine. When confronting rough running, check these lines first for damage, cuts or cracking. If you discover damage, replace the fuel lines, making sure to attach the new parts using the same configuration.

Rebuild or Replace the Carburetor

The next step in leaf blower troubleshooting is rebuilding or replacing the carburetor. This component mixes gasoline and air to power the blower's engine. A sputtering leaf blower or one that doesn't start at all indicates the carburetor is the likely culprit. This part can be rebuilt, but it's often more cost-effective to replace it.
