Lawn-care workers and homeowners use Remington leaf blowers to clear leaves and debris quickly. When a leaf blower experiences engine problems, it can cause symptoms ranging from excessive smoke to the failure to start. Use these steps to find the root of the problem and identify the best repair.

Empty the Fuel

Old or wet gas prevents leaf blower parts from functioning properly and causes the engine to stutter or smoke. Remove all of the gas from the tank, and refill it with a fresh supply. Read your manual to find the correct mix of fuel and two-cycle oil; an incorrect mix can also cause problems.

Maintain the Engine

At the beginning of each season, or any time you notice problems, perform standard engine maintenance. Install a new air filter and fuel filter. Replace the spark plug, and clean off any excess grease from the engine. Look for leaks and cracks in the fuel line, and install a new line if necessary. Often, a thorough tune-up can eliminate the need for other leaf blower troubleshooting steps.

Look for Damage

If your leaf blower's engine continues to have problems, look for damage to the larger components. Check the fan blade for bending or cracking. Examine the carburetor for signs of grease build-up; a gummed-up system can create an unusual amount of smoke or prevent the engine from working properly. As a last resort, rebuild the carburetor or replace it with a new part.
