Common problems with garage door openers

  1. Your garage door opener isn’t responding to the remote—The solution to an unresponsive garage door opener could be as simple as replacing the batteries in your remote unit, or it could be that the remote is no longer able to send a signal to your Chamberlain garage door opener. If changing out the batteries isn’t fixing the issue, you may need to get a new universal remote.
  2. Your Chamberlain garage door opener is running, but the door isn’t moving—If you can hear the garage motor running but the door and chain aren’t moving, you are probably going to need to replace your gear and sprocket assembly. These parts are what move the chain to open and close your garage door and often break when your garage door is out of balance, causing too much tension on the sprocket.
  3. Your garage door starts to close and then immediately reverses back to an open position—Most of the time, this problem is due to issues with your safety sensors. Check that nothing is blocking the sensors and that they are properly aligned. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, your sensors may need to be replaced.
  4. The garage door is stuck down, but the trolley is moving when you attempt to open it—When your trolley moves but your garage door stays down when you try to open it, the emergency release rope may have been pulled. Reset the emergency release to connect the trolley to the door. If the trolley is broken, replace it. Fortunately, it’s a fairly inexpensive part. It’s a simple repair to swap out your broken trolley with a new one.

What are some critical parts of a Chamberlain garage door opener?

The most commonly replaced parts on a Chamberlain garage door are

  1. The gear and sprocket assembly—The gear and sprocket assembly use the motor’s power to turn the chain.
  2. The motor unit—The motor is the main powerhouse of the opener.
  3. The garage door safety sensors—The sensors are the “eyes” of the garage door opener, which prevent the garage door from closing on a person or another object in its path.
  4. The limit switch—The limit switch is what tells the garage door opener how long the motor needs to run to fully open and close the garage door.
  5. The logic board—The logic board receives signals from your remote that tell the garage door opener to open or close the door.
