Question and Answers

Q:

WED5840SW0 DRYER NOT STARTING

A:

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

Several different problems could prevent your dryer from running. First, check to see if the drum light turns on when the dryer door is opened. If it does not, then you need to check the breaker to make sure that it is not tripped. If the breaker is okay, check for proper voltage at the outlet using the first image below as a guide. NOTE: You should only check this live voltage if you are completely confident that you can safely make this measurement using a volt/ohm meter.

The wiring diagram for your dryer is shown in the second image. This diagram shows several components that could prevent the dryer from running. I recommend unplugging the dryer and checking the thermal fuse. To access this fuse, remove the back panel. The thermal fuse is located on the blower housing. It will have blue wires attached to it.

To check this fuse remove at least one wire and measure the resistance across the leads of the fuse using a volt/ohm meter. You should measure near zero ohms of resistance (continuity). If you measure infinite resistance (open), then the fuse is blown and will need to be replaced. NOTE: If the thermal fuse is blown, I recommend checking for a restricted exhaust vent that could cause this fuse to blow.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this is helpful. Check the things I have covered here, and if I may be of further assistance, include more details, in a reply to this post.
