Why does the basket squeak on my GE washer model WCSR2090DBWW when it is agitating?


The squeak is likely caused by the brake on the transmission slipping. To permanently fix this problem, you would probably need to replace the transmission (part WH38X10002) and the leg/platform assembly (part WH17X101) underneath the transmission. These components would have to be replaced together at the same time. The brake lining supplied with the new transmission would have to be properly installed. The drawback in this fix is that the parts would cost over $200 and the installation of these parts is not easy. A service technician is normally needed to complete this type of repair properly. The parts would likely cost almost as much as replacing this washer with a similar model.

If you are able to live with the squeak, I recommend that you continue to use the washer. The slipping brake should not harm anything. You may be able to resolve the squeaking for a while by filling the washer with a heavy load and then lifting the lid to stop the washer a couple of times when it is in the final spin cycle. This may help prevent the brake lining from squeaking.

I provided the procedure for removing the front panel of the washer in the image below if you still need it. Be sure that you unplug the washer before removing this panel. To remove the agitator, just pull up to snap it off. It may have a build-up of detergent and other media that may prevent you from pulling it off unless significant force is used to pop it off. You should not need to remove the agitator at this time. I recommend leaving it alone for now. If you want to verify the cause of the squeaking as mentioned above, you should be able to pull off the front panel and determine the source of the noise.
