Q:

what does E 21 error code mean?

A:

I am posting the error code E21 from the technical manual below.

E21- Lost Speed Sense Error This error appears when the console does not receive a speed sensor signal when it is expecting to (the speed is set higher than 0.0 MPH). If the belt moved slightly prior to the error appearing, the cause is with the sensor, positioning of the sensor, or the wiring from the sensor to the console. If the motor did not move at all prior to the error appearing, check the motor, controller, and wiring connecting the console, power board, controller, and motor.

Q:

21" self-Propelled 917.377110 will not disengage

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. First, check the drive cable. If the cable is not releasing, the wheels will stay engaged. If the cable is fine, check the pinion pawls. If there is a burr, it could cause it not to release. You can also lube them with dry graphite. There is a left and right side. If you have had them off at the same time make, sure you have not mixed them up.

Please feel free to add more details below if you need further assistance.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for the reply. The springs could be causing the problem. I recommend replacing the pinion assembly on both sides. The reason is the manufacture has stated if the cover on the back of the pinion is not tight against the mower, housing the drive will not function properly. I know they have changed the design slightly but I am not sure exactly what was changed. I hope this is helpful.

I am a little confused. My original advise for replacing the pinions is for the wheels staying engaged. If the mower wants to continue to drive when you let off the lever, you have to adjust the belt. This is the same adjustment for tightening the belt. When the lever is released, the belt should be loose enough to stop the drive pulley when the wheels are on the ground. The will usually keep spinning if the mower is lifted. The reason is there is no friction on the wheels. If the wheels will not disengage when the lever is released and the pulley is stopped, the problem is with the pinions.

Hi Glenn I recommend removing the belt cover and run the mower. The idler should return when you let ff the drive handle. If it is not the belt will not slip and will keep tension on the pulley so, the pinions cannot release when you push it forward a few inches. I recommend checking the idler for binding. Lubing the pivot might help it return. I do not think this model uses a return spring. I had another customer with the same problem and he found everything was working but the belt would not slip. He ended up spraying a little WD-40 on the belt and it worked. I cannot recommend doing this but it work for him. I hope this is helpful.
