Q:

Why won’t my snow thrower start?

A:

You did not specify if the engine turns over, or if it is completely dead. I will give you a few things I would check first. I assume it will at least turn over.

Make sure there is fuel in the tank. Check to see if you have spark at the spark plug. Make sure the air filter is clean.

If you have no spark you'll want to replace the spark plug. If you still are not getting a spark, you need to check your ignition module. The voltage to the spark plug comes from the ignition module on the engine. When the magnets on the flywheel pass by the coil on the ignition module it generates voltage and discharges it through the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

The ignition module has a wire attached to it from the tractor ignition switch. This wire grounds the ignition module and kills the spark. Something in the tractor might be killing the spark or you might have a bad ignition module. If you remove the grounding wire from the ignition module and it still doesn't spark, the ignition module is bad. You can test the ignition module by reading ohms from the spark plug wire to the laminates on the ignition module. You should read infinity or open circuit.

I recommend removing the blower housing on the engine and disconnecting the black wire from the ignition module. This is the kill wire and if you have spark with the wire disconnected something in the safety switches is grounding the module out. If you still have no spark, the module is bad.

I have included a link to your owners’ manual, please click here; Owners’ manual

The section on operation starts on page 12.

If you need more help please resubmit question with more details.

I recommend calling an experienced service technician to better evaluate and possibly repair your snow thrower.

Q:

Which lubricant for motor on Craftsman 31517240 Craftsman 1/4HP, 2 speed Sabre Saw?

A:

Thank you for your question. I will be happy to assist you. I looked up the model number you submitted. The lubricant use on this saw is a quality high pressure high temperature grease. Any wheel bearing grease should be fine. If you add grease, do not pack the whole case with grease. Just put grease on the gears and other moving parts. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark.
