Question and Answers

Q:

Smelling gas from dryer vent

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

In order for the timer to advance, the timer motor must have 120 volts applied across timer terminals BK and TM. In the timed dry setting, timer contact terminals TM and WB must close to complete the Neutral supply to timer terminal WB. When timer contact TM and WB closes, the timer should 120 volts supplied to it. You will need a voltage meter to diagnose if the timer motor is getting the 120 volt power supply. When the timer is set to the AUTO cycle, timer contact TM and OR must close in order for the timer to advance. I added an image below of the wiring diagram. I traced the heating circuit and timer circuit for you. The green represents the Neutral and Red represents the 120 voltage. NOTE: I do not recommend making any voltage measurements if you do not have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so; otherwise I suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dryer.

If you are certain you smell gas coming out of the vent outside and not in the garage, it could have a faulty gas valve assembly and it's not shutting the gas off completely when the burner cycles off or the burner is not burning properly.  Since your model dryer does not have the front lower access panel to remove in order to watch the burner operation, you will need to pry the inspection cover off located below the door and what the burner operation through the inspection hole. Each time the glow bar igniter glows, it will glow red hot for a 15-30 seconds and then you will hear a click and the burner should ignite as the igniter fades off. Now, when the gas valve opens, some gas will be blown out the vent before the burner actually ignites so don't be alarmed if you smell a little gas right before the burner ignites.

Check the things I have covered here and if I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
