Q:

My Poulan Pro chainsaws start but won't stay running. Model #'s pp3516avx & pp4218avhd please advise. Thanks Dave

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the chainsaw. If the fuel mixture in the chainsaw is older than 5 weeks old, it should be drained. Then refill with fresh fuel mix. If this does not help I suspect there is a problem with the fuel system. I recommend checking in the fuel tank first. When you look in the tank, you should see a fuel line with a white filter attached to the end. Then inspect the fuel line. If it is hard and brittle, it has to be replaced. Here is a video that shows how to replace the fuel line. If the fuel line is fine, I suspect the carburetor is to blame. The carburetor will have to be cleaned or replaced. Here is a video that show how to clean the carburetor. Before you remove the carburetor, make sure to note the fuel line and cable connections. This will save a lot of frustration later. The parts for the chainsaw can be ordered from the following link. Parts for Craftsman chainsaw

I hope this helpful. If you need further assistance, please reply below with more details.

Q:

Poulan chain saw will not accelerate.

A:

Thank you for your question on the Poulan chainsaw not accelerating when you pull the trigger.

When you replaced the carburetor did you hook up the throttle linkage for the trigger? Can you tell if the throttle lever is moving when you pull the trigger?

If you installed the carburetor correctly with all the linkage connected then you my want to open the low speed adjustment screw a 1/4 turn counterclockwise to see if that will help with throttle up. If it is set to lean it will bog down and dies when trying to throttle up.

If it boggs down then it is starving for fuel.

Please give me a little more detail to the questions and suggestion above to see if that helped. If it did not then we can continue to troubleshoot with that information.

Please let me know what you find out.

Thanks Drew for the update. Sometimes you can use the tip of a small screw driver and put pressure on the adjustment screw and turn it. Depending on the type of head on the screw you may be able to use a small needle nose pliers to turn the adjustment screw. As a side thought have you checked the spark arrestor screen in the muffler to see if it is plugged up. If it is use a steel brush to clean it. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. Sam A.
