Why is my Protron not turning on consistently?

Your TV is more than likely starting to "go bad". I have seen a lot this TV and similar sets that has the same symptom as you. The most common thing we find is problems with the power supply. It could be a bad solder connection or a bad cap, with the bad cap being the first place to check.

When a cap goes bad because of voltage spikes past it tolerance, it can heat up the solution inside and cause it to expand and bulge at the top. This is nice because it gives a nice sign to let you know what component is damaged and needs to be replaced. The good news is that if this is your scenario, these are not surface mount devices and usually readily available locally. The hard part is finding a tech willing to work on the set. There are hardly any tech documents available and as you mentioned, any contact information doesn't lead anywhere.

The reason I suspect the caps is because you can get it to work by cycling the power. I suspect you are charging the cap enough to keep the voltage at a workable level or filtering enough of the AC if that is what was shutting it down. Check locally to see if a shop is willing to take a look for you for a diagnostic fee and they can check to see if there are any components damaged.
