Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't my GE dishwasher dispense detergent/soap properly?

A:

Only liquid or gel automatic dishwashing detergent can be used in the bulk dispenser. If I understood the detail of your question correctly, you indicated that your bulk dispenser tank was full of water. If you have water in this tank, it would need to be purged and liquid or gel detergent added to use the smart dispenser.

Follow these steps to purge the dispenser:

  1. Make sure that the Pre-wash, Added Heat and Heated Dry LEDs are off.
  2. Press Heated Dry and the DOWN ARROW keys together for 3 seconds. All LEDs will illuminate.
  3. Press Added Heat and the UP ARROW key together for 3 seconds. The Anti-bacterial LED will illuminate.
  4. Press the Start key one timer.
  5. Press Normal Wash and make sure that Pre-wash, Added Heat and Heated Dry LEDs are off.
  6. Press the Start key. The dishwasher will run a complete cycle without the main motor running. The dispenser pump will run instead of the circulation pump to purge the dispenser tank. The cycle is complete when the clean light illuminates. This should take about 60 minutes.
  7. Open the door. The system is purged and ready to fill with detergent.

Be careful not to mix liquid dishwasher detergents containing chlorine (like Cascade Pure Rinse Formula) and a liquid dishwasher detergent containing enzymes (like Cascade Complete). When this happens, the chlorine destroys the enzymes resulting in poor wash performance. Refer to the labels of the liquid detergents that you use for this information. Combining these two types of liquid dishwasher detergent also causes the two liquids to coagulate and buildup around the level sensor. This can prevent the level sensor from working properly.

If this information does not help, resubmit your question with additional details for more help with this detergent dispenser problem.

Hello Jim. I looked in the manual for this dishwasher but I did not see a procedure for flushing or emptying the smart dispenser. I added a link for the manual below this response. You may be able to get by with using up the detergent that you have in the dispenser and then refill it with the new detergent. If you need more help, let us know.
