Q:

Zts 7500 won't start

A:

Thank you for your question on the ZTS 7500 not starting.

I will need a little more information about the starting issue.

Is the engine turning over when you try to start it?

If the engine is turning over and you have fuel and spark, it should be running.

I am concerned that you may not have fuel going to the carburetor. When you turn the key do you hear a small click down by the bottom of the carburetor?

If you do then we know the anti-backfire solenoid is working to let fuel into the carburetor bowl.

Please let me know if the engine is spinning over when you attempt to start it.

Please let me know what you find out and we can continue troubleshooting with that information.

Thank you for you update on the ZTS tractor not starting. If you have compression, fuel, spark at the spark plugs and you have a clean air filter, and the engine is spinning and it still will not start, then I would be suspect if you did not hear the solenoid click when you turn the key on you are not getting enough fuel or the contents of the fuel is bad. There needs to be sufficient fuel in the bowl to draw fuel up into the engine from the carburetor. I would suggest having someone turn the key on and off just to the on position not to the start position, and you having your hand on the solenoid to see if you can feel the plunger on the solenoid going up and down when the key is turn on and off. Please let me know what you find out. Sam A.

Thank you for the update on the solenoid. Jon please give me the model number off the tractor so I can look at the wiring diagram to see if this model has a start circuit relay. It should start with a 107.XXXXXXX model number of something similar to this. There are two different style wire harnesses and I need to see it to give you a more definitive answer. Sam A.

Thank you for the update Jon. That model number works for the 44" deck and a 20 hp Kohler engine. Your model does not have a start circuit relay. So we will need to look further for a problem. Since you seem to have some ability to do more diagnostics I have decided to suggest you try the following. I normally do not recommend this for safety reasons but if you remove the air cleaner and poor a little fuel down the throat of the carburetor and then try to start the tractor. If it fires and starts we know it is not a spark issue. Only do this if you feel comfortable that you can do this safely.(Please make sure you do this safely and do not stand over the open carburetor throat in case of back fire. In looking at the parts list it does not show the fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor for being separate from the carburetor, so you have to replace the whole carburetor if that proves to be the problem. This Kohler engine also has a fuel pump, and it may have failed. You could pull off the hose from the fuel pump to the carburetor and turn the engine over a couple of rotations to see if it is pumping fuel. If you do not feel comfortable with doing any of these checks safely then I would suggest having a technician service the ZTS. Please let me know what you find out or decide to do. Sam A.

Thank you Jon; for the update on the mower. At this point I would suggest that you shut the fuel off going to the carburetor and remove the anti-backfire solenoid off the bottom of the carburetor and clean it to make sure the plunger is functioning correctly. You should be able to push on the plunger and it should move up and down freely. If it does not use some carburetor cleaner to clean the plunger until it moves freely. When you put the sol If that is not the case then I would go with your suggestion of replacing the carburetor. Sam A.
