Q:

What would have failed to cause mu dryer to stop heating?

A:

Just because the circuit breakers appear OK does not mean you have the correct voltage supply at the dryer. Did you flip both circuit breakers OFF and back ON 2-3 times and recheck the dryer for heat?

The voltage supply at the dryer should be verified using a Voltage meter first before any other trouble shooting steps. The dryer must have 220-240 volts present where the power cord attaches to the dryer terminal block. The voltage should be measured across the two (2) out side terminals at the terminal block. NOTE: I do not recommend checking voltages unless you have experience and you feel safe and confident in doing so. Once you have confirmed the correct voltage then you will need to check each electrical component which is wired in series with the heating element. The heating element must have 220-240 volts applied to it or it will not heat. If any of the components have an open circuit the heating element is not going to heat. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before removing the rear panel. The components can be check with an ohm meter. Check one component at time by removing the wires from the component being tested. Test the component for continuity using the OHM meter. Each component should have continuity. I added an image below showing the location of key’s 31, 42, 34 and 14 so you can disconnect and test each one.

Possible failures:

  • Timer
  • Thermal cutoff (key31)
  • Operating thermostat (key#42)
  • High limit thermostat (key#34)
  • Heating element (key#14)
Motor centrifugal switch
  • Voltage supply
  • Burnt wire connection

I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dryer.
