Q:

Do you have to hook up the water to my refrigerator in order for it to cool?

A:

No, the refrigerator does not have to have water connected to it in order for the refrigerator to reach freezing temperatures inside the freezer and to get cold in the fresh food section. Water is only needed to make ice and dispense water.

You symptom indicates the lack of airflow circulating over the evaporator coils inside the freezer. It could have a stuck air flow damper control. It could be an indication the evaporator fan motor inside the freezer is not running in order to recirculate the air through out the freezer and fresh food section. It could be a sealed system failure too.

I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your refrigerator.
