Q:

How do I test to see if the heating element is shorted in my water heater?

A:

In order to test to see if the heating elements are shorted will require an Ohm meter.

  1. Disconnect the power supply to the water heater by flipping both house circuit breakers OFF dedicated for the water heater.
  2. Remove the wires from both top and bottom heating elements.
  3. Check for continuity between each terminal of the heating element and the flange/nut of the element.

If it shows continuity between any one of the two terminals and the flange, the element is shorted ground and will need to be replaced.

Q:

Do I need to replace the upper thermostat on my water heater if neither heating element has voltage?

A:

Your details indicate a failed upper thermostat. If you measured 240 volts across the red and black voltage supply lines across the top two terminals of the upper thermostat and the voltage is not being supplied to either element replace the upper thermostat. Part# 31917. I added a direct link to Sears Parts Direct with the upper thermostat already looked up.
